Could nudity boost body confidence? What research says about naturism

Studies suggest naturism, or non-sexual social nudity, may help people develop a more positive body image and reduce anxiety about their appearance. Naturists say seeing diverse, real bodies helps them stop comparing themselves to others and rejecting their own flaws.

Researchers and members of naturist communities say that spending time in settings where people freely show their bodies without sexual context can positively affect how people view themselves. A psychology expert describes naturism as social nudity without sexual expectations, allowing people to see bodies as they truly are — varied in shape, size and with all kinds of individual features.

Real bodies versus idealized images

Several women who shared their experiences say that before discovering naturism, they spent years feeling ashamed and dissatisfied with their appearance. After attending naturist events, many noticed they stopped constantly criticizing their bodies and began viewing them more neutrally, or even positively. Psychologists explain that society's idea of a "normal" body often fails to reflect how most people actually look, and naturist communities can help shift that perception.

The problem is said to be especially pronounced on social media, where people constantly compare themselves to filtered and AI-enhanced images. Research indicates that people who take part in naturist activities tend to have higher self-esteem and a more positive body image. One study involving nearly 850 participants found that nudity experiences within naturist settings were linked to a more positive body attitude, while another, smaller study found that participants who took part in activities without clothing showed greater body acceptance — partly explained by reduced worry about how others judged their bodies.

Community and nature, not just nudity

Participants say naturism also helped them accept scars and other bodily features they previously saw as flaws. Naturist events reportedly bring together a wide range of people, including those with health conditions or physical differences, reinforcing the idea that there is no single "correct" body type.

Experts stress, however, that naturism is not only about removing clothes — for many, it is also a way to feel closer to nature and connected to a community. At the same time, scientists note that research into the effects of social nudity on body image remains relatively limited, and broader studies are needed before drawing firmer conclusions.
