The week in pictures: French student protests, October 7 anniversary and Adenot's return to Earth

France 24 has compiled the week's notable photos: student protests continue in France, astronaut Sophie Adenot has returned from the International Space Station, and Israel marked three years since Hamas's attack.

Blockades and protests by secondary school and university students continued across France this week, at times turning violent. Meanwhile, French astronaut Sophie Adenot came back to Earth after eight months on the International Space Station, and Israel marked three years since the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023. The broadcaster France 24 has gathered photographs of these events taken by the AFP and Reuters agencies.

Protests in France

A nationwide protest movement over learning conditions is under way. During a high-school students' demonstration in Paris on October 6, Bally Bagayoko, the mayor of Saint-Denis, stood between protesters and police officers. On October 9, graffiti reading "the class struggle begins in high school" was visible near the lycée Sophie-Germain in the capital.

Israel and other events

On a Tel Aviv beach, a commemorative installation was set up for the third anniversary of Hamas's attacks on Israel, and people stood on it waving Israeli flags on October 7.

In Brazil, right-wing senator and Liberal Party (PL) presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro addressed supporters at a rally in Goiania on October 6.

South African lawyer Navi Pillay, known as a champion of international law, learned on October 9 that she had been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. She was at the historic Courtroom 600 of Nuremberg's Palace of Justice in Germany.

In Ukraine, two passenger buses were struck by projectiles in Kramatorsk, near the front line, on October 8, according to a photograph released by the Donetsk Region Prosecutor's Office.

In Mekelle, Ethiopia, federal police resumed patrols on October 9 after federal forces repelled rebels from the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).

In New Delhi on October 10, security officers arrested a protester at a demonstration organised by the Cockroach Janta Party, which was calling for the resignation of Indian Electoral Commission chair Gyanesh Kumar.
