Saturday Night Live UK returns to Sky One at 10pm this evening, marking a surprising comeback for a show that almost nobody expected to succeed when it first launched.

The British adaptation of the long-running American late-night comedy format turned out to be an unlikely hit earlier this year, with much of its success credited to comedian Jack Shep's standout impression of Princess Diana. That breakout run has turned the show's return into a genuinely anticipated event for autumn television.

New faces, new host

The comedic cast members who made the first season a success are all returning, joined this time by newcomer Freddie Meredith. The new season also introduces a first for the British version: a celebrity host. Actor Jeff Goldblum will front the opening episode, a role that didn't exist in the show's debut run.

Like its American counterpart, Saturday Night Live UK combines sketch comedy, musical performances and topical satire, with hosting duties rotating week to week once the format beds in further.

The show's return comes amid a busy Saturday night television schedule in the UK, competing for attention alongside the BBC's Last Night of the Proms and various entertainment gameshows on ITV. Given the doubts that surrounded its launch, the programme's ability to draw viewers back for a second run will be closely watched by broadcasters and critics alike.
