Storm in Latgale causes many incidents – fallen trees block roads and power lines
In the afternoon, a thunderstorm hit Latgale, prompting rescuers to respond to 28 calls about trees falling onto roads, with the majority in Rēzekne and its district.

On Tuesday afternoon, a severe thunderstorm swept through eastern Latvia, causing significant damage. The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) received 28 calls between 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM reporting trees knocked down by the wind onto roadways. Most of these incidents – 21 – occurred in the city of Rēzekne and the surrounding Rēzekne district. Similar reports also came from the Ludza and Preiļi districts.
Firefighters are at the scenes using chainsaws to cut up the fallen trees and clear the roads. There have also been cases where trees have fallen onto power lines, potentially disrupting electricity supply.
Earlier forecasts had warned of thunderstorms in eastern Latvia during the afternoon, with heavy rain, possible hail, and wind gusts reaching 15 to 19 meters per second.
