Major police operation in Nõmme to detain migrants
A large police operation took place in the Tallinn district of Nõmme on Thursday, detaining several migrants. Last week, Estonia detained 63 illegal migrants, bringing the total this year to 102.
On Thursday, July 30, a major police operation was carried out in the Nõmme district of Tallinn to detain suspected illegal migrants. According to local residents, the police also used drones. A resident who spoke to ERR said about a dozen people were detained.
The operation is part of a broader trend. On Wednesday, July 29, the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) reported that 63 migrants had been detained this week, with no end to the influx in sight. Most migrants enter Estonia via the Latvia-Belarus border, and the flow is expected to continue until autumn bad weather sets in.
Interior Minister Igor Taro stated that Belarus, encouraged by Russia, is behind the migration crisis, directing migrants to the Baltic states. The head of the PPA, Egert Belichev, said on Wednesday that hybrid warfare has reached the Baltics and Finland, as controls have been tightened on the Poland-Lithuania and Poland-Germany borders.
According to Belichev, the migration crisis escalated this week with 63 detentions, bringing the total for this year to 102. Last year, 39 people were detained. The arrival of so many illegal migrants creates additional pressure not only on the PPA but also on the judicial system and local authorities.
