Neon announces its own SCP Foundation movie with open license, contrasting A24

Film studio Neon has announced it is working on a movie based on the internet horror project SCP Foundation, capitalizing on a situation where rival studio A24 drew criticism from one of the internet's largest horror communities.

A24 had previously angered the SCP Wiki community by announcing its own SCP Foundation film project without, as reported, contacting the SCP Wiki team or committing to release the work under the required Creative Commons license. SCP Foundation content is distributed under a ShareAlike-type license, which imposes certain requirements on anyone using it.

Seeing an opportunity for positive publicity, Neon capitalized on the situation and announced its own SCP movie. Unlike A24, the studio proactively reached out to the SCP Foundation Wiki team and has pledged to release the film under the Creative Commons ShareAlike (CC BY-SA) license.

Not an official project

The SCP Wiki team emphasizes that this film should not be considered an official SCP production. None of the wiki's staff is involved in writing or producing the film, the team is not receiving compensation, and its official position is not to endorse such projects.

Little is currently known publicly about the film itself beyond the licensing details. Neon has stated the film will be released theatrically in 2027, suggesting a relatively quick turnaround and potentially a lower-budget production — given the challenges of turning a profit on a film released under a ShareAlike license.

The SCP Foundation Wiki admin team said in a statement that they appreciate Neon's communication and its commitment to following the license requirements, as well as the spirit of collaboration at the core of the SCP Foundation project.
