More than 1,300 people are currently unaccounted for following the disaster. Rescue teams have launched a large-scale search effort to locate the missing, who include not only local residents but also tourists and pilgrims who were in the valley when the floods struck.
Some of the hardest-hit villages lay directly in the path of the floodwaters and were reportedly destroyed in their entirety. The region's mountainous terrain and remoteness from major population centers are complicating both the rescue operation and efforts to gather accurate information about the scale of the disaster.
Rescue teams are now focused on reaching the affected areas as quickly as possible to determine the fate of those still missing.
