At least 157 dead as Nepal hit by one of worst natural disasters in years
Flash floods in Nepal have killed at least 157 people, while more than 400 others, including many foreigners, remain missing. Neighboring Tibet has also suffered casualties and disappearances.
Nepal is facing one of the most severe natural disasters in recent years after flash floods swept through the country, killing at least 157 people, authorities reported on Wednesday. Fast-moving waters carried away people along with their homes and vehicles, causing widespread destruction.
A total of 403 tourists remain unaccounted for, including 342 foreign nationals. Also missing are 28 police officers.
Tibet also affected
The disaster has extended into neighboring Chinese-controlled Tibet, where at least three people have died and 265 others remain missing.
Pilgrims and tourists from many countries
Nepal's Tourism Board reported that among the missing are 133 Indian citizens who were on a pilgrimage to the sacred Hindu site of Mount Kailash in Tibet. The missing also include 47 US citizens, 34 Australians, 33 Britons and 24 Canadians, as well as tourists from Spain, Lithuania and Germany.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, though the situation in the affected region continues to be described as extremely severe.
