A devastating flash flood has struck the Himalayan region, sweeping away entire villages and bridges across Nepal and the neighboring Tibet region of China. Officials have confirmed that 180 people have died in the disaster.

Search Operations Continue

Authorities report that more than 1,300 people remain unaccounted for across both the Nepalese and Tibetan sides of the affected area. Rescue teams are continuing to search mountain valleys in hopes of finding survivors, though the remote terrain and scale of destruction are complicating efforts.

Communities located in the direct path of the mud, water and ice torrent were especially hard hit, with many structures, including bridges, destroyed or severely damaged.

The full scope of the disaster is still being assessed, and officials caution that the death toll and number of missing could change as search and rescue operations continue.
