Two Estonians possibly missing after Nepal mudslides

Estonia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday it has information suggesting two Estonian citizens may have been in the China-Nepal border region when major flooding and mudslides struck the area a day earlier. The ministry confirmed it currently has no contact with the two individuals and is closely following the situation as it develops.

Estonia's honorary consul in Nepal has been in touch with local authorities in an effort to gather further details about the pair's whereabouts and condition.

The Foreign Ministry has urged all Estonian citizens currently in the region to reach out to family members in Estonia as soon as possible, and to register their travel plans through the ministry's online registration system so they can be more easily reached in emergencies.

Scale of the disaster

The flooding and mudslides hit the border area between Chinese-administered Tibet and Nepal on Wednesday. According to figures reported Thursday morning, at least 162 people have died. Roughly 400 tourists remain unaccounted for, including 341 foreign nationals.
