33 Latvians missing after Nepal floods — relative awaits news of Agnese and Raimonds
Devastating floods and mudslides in Nepal have left 33 residents of Latvia missing, including pilgrims Agnese and Raimonds who were traveling to Mount Kailash. It is the country's largest such loss since the 2013 Zolitūde tragedy.
Catastrophic flooding in Nepal has caused one of the largest tragedies to affect Latvia in recent memory, with 33 Latvian residents currently unaccounted for. The last time the country faced losses on a comparable scale was in 2013, when the roof of the Maxima supermarket in Zolitūde collapsed, killing 54 people.
Among the missing are mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, and colleagues and friends — dozens of people whose relatives currently have no information about their fate after a mudslide struck the travelers. One of those missing is a woman named Agnese, whose relative expressed hope for a positive outcome, comparing the wait to hoping for something as improbable as an "eighth wonder of the world."
A long-planned pilgrimage
For those who set out on the trip, it was no spontaneous decision — the pilgrimage to the sacred Mount Kailash in Nepal had been planned well in advance and eagerly anticipated as a summer journey. None of the participants could have foreseen that the trip would end in a natural disaster, cutting off contact with loved ones and leaving the fate of dozens of people uncertain.
The situation currently remains unclear, and families, friends and colleagues in Latvia are awaiting any information about the fate of the missing.
