Nepal flood death toll rises to 472, Latvians among the missing
The death toll from flooding in the Nepal-Tibet border region has climbed to 472, with more than 1,400 people, including dozens of Latvian nationals, still reported missing.
Chinese authorities have confirmed that at least three more people died in flooding in the Tibetan border area under Beijing's control. This brings the overall death toll from Wednesday's disaster in the Nepal-Tibet border region to 472.
More than 1,400 people remain unaccounted for, among them hundreds of foreign tourists as well as several dozen Latvian citizens.
Rescue efforts continue
Nepalese police say 3,253 people have been airlifted by helicopter out of the disaster zone, many of them injured. More than 150 people have been taken to hospitals in Kathmandu and in the Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts.
A police spokesperson told the news agency DPA that authorities still do not have a clear picture of how many people are missing and that it will take several more days to fully assess the scale of the disaster. According to current figures from Nepalese authorities, 977 people are listed as missing.
Many of the victims have not yet been identified, as the powerful water and mud flows severely disfigured the bodies.
