Search and rescue efforts are continuing in the Nepal-Tibet border region following devastating flash floods and landslides. As of Saturday, authorities had confirmed 682 deaths, while nearly 3,000 people remained unaccounted for.
Danger from upstream lake
Compounding the difficulty of the rescue effort is a lake that formed upstream as a result of the flooding. The lake threatens to burst its banks, which would send another surge of water downstream and put both rescuers and affected communities at further risk.
FRANCE 24 correspondent Shahzaib Wahlah described the ongoing rescue operations as extremely risky, noting that teams are working in disaster-hit terrain while the threat of a sudden downstream flood from the lake persists.
The situation remains fluid, and the confirmed toll of deaths and missing persons could change as more information emerges from areas that remain difficult to access.
