Netflix developing live-action 'Ravenloft' series based on Dungeons & Dragons

Netflix is working on a new live-action series set in the Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft world, centered on the origins of the iconic vampire Strahd von Zarovich. The news also brought word that another planned D&D adaptation, a Forgotten Realms series, has been dropped.

Netflix is developing a new live-action series based on the Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting Ravenloft, according to a report from Deadline. The project involves executive producer Alfonso Cuarón, writer and executive producer John August, and Hasbro Entertainment.

Ravenloft is one of D&D's most recognizable campaign settings, and it received a fresh update earlier this year with the release of "Ravenloft: The Horrors Within." A live-action adaptation would bring this world to the screen for the first time.

Strahd's origin story

Per Deadline, the series will focus on Strahd von Zarovich, the Darklord vampire who is among D&D's most famous characters. The show is said to trace his transformation from a tragic antihero into one of the franchise's most notorious villains, exploring themes of power, love, obsession, and his undead transformation.

Another D&D project shelved

Alongside the Ravenloft announcement came less welcome news for D&D fans. Deadline reports that Netflix is no longer moving forward with its previously planned live-action Forgotten Realms series, which had been in development with Shawn Levy and Drew Crevello. It remains unclear whether the Ravenloft series will fare better.
