The New Jersey Devils are hiring former Seattle Kraken assistant coach Jessica Campbell as manager of player development and longtime Florida Panthers executive Bryan McCabe as vice president of prospect personnel, according to ESPN, which cited sources. The Hockey News confirmed the report, crediting ESPN's Emily Kaplan.
Who is Jessica Campbell
Campbell, 34, became the first woman to serve as a full-time coach behind an NHL bench. She joined Seattle in July 2024 and was promoted to the Kraken's NHL staff after helping the AHL's Coachella Valley Firebirds reach back-to-back Calder Cup Finals. On April 30, the Kraken announced Campbell would leave the organization once her contract concluded, saying she wanted to explore other coaching roles across the league. A Cornell University graduate, Campbell played for the Calgary Inferno, helping them win the Clarkson Cup in 2016, and for Sweden's Malmö Redhawks. She represented Canada's national program starting in 2008, became a two-time U18 Women's World medalist, was named tournament MVP by the IIHF in 2010, and finished her U18 career tied with Marie-Philip Poulin for the program's all-time scoring lead. After retiring in 2017, she worked as a power-skating instructor and assistant coach at the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy in Kelowna, B.C.
Who is Bryan McCabe
McCabe, 51, played 1,135 NHL games as a defenseman and served as Panthers captain before moving into the front office, where he spent 14 years focused on player development and personnel. He was part of Florida's back-to-back Stanley Cup championship front office before leaving the organization this summer when his contract expired. In New Jersey, McCabe will also serve as assistant general manager of the Devils' AHL affiliate in Utica.
Context
McCabe is the third former Panthers executive to join Devils general manager Sunny Mehta, who spent six seasons in Florida's front office before being named Devils GM in April. Mehta has also hired former Panthers executive Braden Birch as assistant GM and Leo Luongo as director of goaltending.
