Meta has unveiled a new partnership with the New York Times Cooking app that will bring recipe content to both its display-equipped glasses and its broader lineup of non-display AI glasses. The integration was briefly previewed during Meta's developer state of the union at Connect, though the feature is not yet publicly available.
The New York Times Cooking app is set to receive a new "hands-free mode" that lets users pair their glasses with the app to get audio guidance while cooking. According to the New York Times' AJ Chavar, the company built a system that restructures lengthy recipe steps into brief audio instructions, preserving the author's culinary expertise while still including ingredients and measurements.
On Meta's display-enabled Ray-Ban Display glasses, recipe steps will appear as short cards that users can swipe through as they progress through a dish.
A rocky start as a cooking aid
An Engadget reviewer who previously tested Meta's display glasses noted that recipe content was previously only accessible through Meta AI, and even then, steps often didn't stay on screen long enough to complete them, making the glasses impractical for kitchen use.
Meta has not specified an exact date for when the New York Times Cooking app will launch on its glasses, but said the hands-free mode would begin rolling out "later this fall."
