Nexus Mods to require AI disclosure for newly uploaded mods
The PC game modding site Nexus Mods will require authors to declare whether AI was used in new mods. It will not ban AI-generated mods outright, but AI labels will become more prominent.

Nexus Mods, a repository for PC game modifications (mods), has announced that authors uploading new mods will now have to declare whether artificial intelligence (AI) was used in their work. Site owner Victor “Foledinho” Folmann set out the change in a lengthy post on AI-generated content on the platform. The decision affects a large community of players and mod creators and defines how the site handles AI.
What changes
Nexus Mods already has tags for AI-generated and AI-assisted mods, but Folmann acknowledges the information can be made clearer and easier to find. Mods tagged “AI-assisted” must also include a public explanation of how and where AI was used. AI tags will be more prominent on mod pages. The platform is also launching controls to hide AI-generated content on game pages and the homepage, with search to follow.
Why there is no ban
Folmann says the site is “pro-human creativity” but will not introduce an outright ban on AI-generated mods. In his explanation, AI is now used throughout the creation process, from script autocompletion to generating textures, voices and full assets, so drawing a clear boundary is difficult. A ban would not remove AI from modding but would stop people from mentioning it.
Other adjustments
Nexus Mods says it will not use mods to train AI and will not sell or license them to anyone who does. It is working on clearer control over how mods can be reused and on stronger attribution when a mod builds on another author’s mod with permission.
The Recently Added section is also being changed, because some authors upload many mods at once, pushing others down the page. Planned measures include limits on how many mods from one author are shown at a time and tighter restrictions on uploads from new accounts.
Authors of existing mods have 60 days to update them to meet the requirements. The grace period ends on January 2nd, after which the site will begin enforcing the rules.
