NHL: Bedard scores first goal of season, Stamkos saves Nashville in final second
In NHL regular-season games on 16 October, the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Winnipeg Jets in overtime, while the Nashville Predators equalised one second before the end of regulation. The Philadelphia Flyers' losing run at the start of the season reached nine games.

Several regular-season games were played in the NHL, North America's professional ice hockey league, on 16 October. The Chicago Blackhawks won 4-3 in overtime at home against the Winnipeg Jets, the Nashville Predators lost to the San Jose Sharks in a shootout, and the Philadelphia Flyers suffered their ninth defeat of the season.
Bedard and Kane power Chicago
Connor Bedard, playing his second game of the season, scored his first goals of the campaign. He converted a power play in the middle of the first period and also set up the winning goal in overtime, which he scored after a pass from Patrick Kane. Kane had two assists in the game and became the all-time leader in that category among US-born players, overtaking Phil Housley.
Stamkos equalises in the last second
The San Jose Sharks beat the Nashville Predators 3-2 in a shootout on home ice. The only successful shootout attempt came from Sharks captain Macklin Celebrini. Nashville still earned a point, as veteran Steven Stamkos levelled the score one second before the end of regulation. It is the third time in the club's history that the Predators have equalised in the final second. Stamkos was responsible for two of those goals, and Mikael Granlund for one.
Philadelphia's streak continues
The Detroit Red Wings beat the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 at home. Andrew Copp scored the winning goal less than five minutes from the end. Philadelphia has lost all nine games of the new season, the longest losing streak at the start of a season in Flyers history. The New York Rangers began the 1943-44 season with 11 consecutive losses.
Other games
Matt Boldy scored a hat-trick as the Minnesota Wild beat the St. Louis Blues 5-4. Vegas Golden Knights captain Mark Stone also scored three goals, and Jack Eichel had three points, as the Golden Knights beat the Calgary Flames 6-2.
