Canadian NHL commentator Magvairs, known for working between the team benches during games, stated in an interview with LTV that Latvian hockey players earn respect due to their passion. He noted that interviews with club representatives can be misleading, as players can create a deceptive impression of their abilities. As examples, he mentioned Canadian Tyler Wright, selected 12th overall by the Edmonton Oilers, and Swedish Markus Näslund, taken 16th by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Wright made a more convincing impression in interviews, while Näslund had a more prominent career.

Magvairs emphasized that the most important qualities for young players are character, daring, and the ability to adapt to training requirements. In his view, these qualities are embodied by Alberts Šmits, drafted fifth overall by the New York Rangers this year. Šmits has played in Finland's and Germany's leagues, as well as World U20 and senior championships, and also participated in the Olympic tournament – demonstrating that he meets the mentioned requirements.

Magvairs also mentioned Dano Ločmelis, who is currently in the Boston Bruins organization and gradually maturing into a full-fledged NHL player. He pointed out that a player's true potential is revealed through personal conversations and work, not through formal interviews.
