The Netherlands national football team claimed a convincing 5-1 win over Sweden on Sunday. In the 55th minute, Sweden's Antoni Elanga scored after a pass from Alexander Isak, racing past three Dutch defenders and slotting the ball into the top left corner to make it 1-4. However, the Netherlands responded with a fifth goal in the 89th minute when Samerville scored on a counterattack, firing into the bottom left corner. It was Samerville's second goal in four international appearances.
Prior to this match, Sweden had beaten Tunisia 5-1 in their opening game, while the Netherlands drew 2-2 with Japan. The two teams previously met in the 1974 World Cup (0-0) and in a European Championship quarterfinal 30 years later, which the Netherlands won on penalties. Their most recent encounter before this was in 2018 World Cup qualifying, first a 1-1 draw and then a 2-0 win for the Netherlands.
In the first round, Liverpool players featured prominently – Isak was involved in three goals, while Dutchman Ryan Gravenberch assisted both of the Netherlands' goals.
