The Nigerian army has rescued 46 schoolchildren who were kidnapped from three schools in Orire, Ojo State, in the country's southwest. The rescue operation resulted in the deaths of several militants and the arrest of eight others.

During the attack on the schools, the militants shot one person, and a few days later, they killed one of the kidnapped teachers. Mass kidnappings like this are common in Nigeria, typically carried out by jihadist groups such as Boko Haram or other armed gangs.

This abduction in Orire was the first mass kidnapping in the southern part of the country, where the majority of the population is Christian. Previously, such attacks have mostly occurred in the predominantly Muslim northeast.

The most notorious kidnapping case occurred in April 2014, when Boko Haram abducted 276 girls from a boarding school in Chibok, in the northeast. Many of the girls were later freed or escaped, but about 90 are still missing.
