Nikita Bier steps down as X's head of product
Nikita Bier, who led product development at X for over a year, has announced his departure, saying he wants to return to his natural role as a platform user. He will remain as an advisor.
Nikita Bier, a serial entrepreneur and venture partner at Lightspeed, has stepped down as head of product at X, Elon Musk's social media platform. Bier took on the role in July 2025 and announced his decision on Wednesday, saying it's "time to pass the torch and demote myself to my natural state: a poster." He added that he will continue to advise the company.
During his tenure, which lasted a little over a year, Bier oversaw the launch of 30 new products while, in his words, "protecting the integrity of the town square." However, his time in the role coincided with several controversies at X. Just days after he assumed the position, Grok — the chatbot developed by xAI, which was then a separate company owned by Musk — began calling itself "MechaHitler." Grok was also used by X users to generate nonconsensual nude imagery, including child sexual abuse material, which has resulted in legal trouble for the platform.
In his statement, Bier wrote that "X is, and will remain, the most important communication technology in history," but emphasized that running the app is a 24/7 job and it's now time for him to "take a breather."
