Niemann claims New York title as Rahm locks up LIV season crown
Joaquin Niemann led wire-to-wire to win the LIV Golf New York event, while Jon Rahm secured his third consecutive season title despite a poor final round.
Chilean golfer Joaquin Niemann held the lead throughout all four rounds to win the LIV Golf New York tournament at Trump National Bedminster in New Jersey. A closing round of 69, two under par, took him to 16 under for the event, giving him a three-stroke victory.
American Harold Varner III finished second, three shots behind. The win was Niemann's ninth on the LIV circuit, a record for the series, and the 27-year-old met US President Donald Trump afterwards.
"I feel like the more they push me, the better golfer I'm going to become from every experience," Niemann said after the round.
England's Lee Westwood and Zimbabwe's Scott Vincent shared third place, seven strokes off the pace.
Rahm secures season title
Spaniard Jon Rahm had a difficult week on the course, closing with a 76 to finish tied for 41st, but he had already wrapped up the LIV season championship for the third year running. Ranked 13th in the world, Rahm holds an unassailable 219-point lead over American Bryson DeChambeau ahead of the final individual event of the season in Indianapolis in two weeks.
The 31-year-old has won twice this season, in Hong Kong and Mexico, from 12 events, adding four runner-up finishes. Last year he claimed the season title without winning a single tournament.
"It has been a great year," Rahm said. "A little sour taste in my mouth because of how badly I played this week, but it has been something to be proud of. After last year, not getting a win and possibly having a question mark over the season-long race, to win twice and win it again definitely feels good."
The LIV season will conclude with the team championship in Michigan from 27-30 August.
