Nintendo has officially announced a new entry in its long-running Metroid series called Metroid Ravenous. The game is coming to the Switch 2 console, with a release date set for January 28th, 2027.

Building on Metroid Dread

Visually and conceptually, the new title appears to build on the foundation laid by Metroid Dread. Although it remains a 2D game, it incorporates 3D graphics and numerous cinematic action sequences. Players will be able to parry enemy attacks, and protagonist Samus retains her signature ability to roll into the compact Morph Ball form.

One notable addition is that Samus appears able to absorb energy from enemies in order to survive, a mechanic reflected in Nintendo's marketing tagline "eat or be eaten." The game also features a range of intimidating enemies, including giant creatures and a group of futuristic, cape-wearing fighters who attack Samus with blades and spinning metal headgear.

Part of a franchise revival

Ravenous marks the latest chapter in what has become something of a resurgence for the Metroid series in recent years. Nintendo released Metroid Dread in 2021, followed by a remaster of Metroid Prime for the original Switch in 2023, and Metroid Prime 4 last year.
