How to watch Nintendo's Legend of Zelda 40th anniversary Direct

Nintendo will air a special 30-minute Direct on September 8 dedicated to Zelda's 40th anniversary, expected to cover the Ocarina of Time remake and the upcoming film, ahead of a regular Direct on Wednesday covering other Switch 2 titles.

Nintendo is splitting its news this week across two separate broadcasts instead of packing everything into a single Direct. Ahead of Wednesday's regular Nintendo Direct, which will cover other upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 games, the company will hold a dedicated Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct starting at 10AM ET on September 8. The stream will run for roughly 30 minutes and can be watched on YouTube or through the Nintendo Today! app.

Nintendo has already confirmed that the showcase will include new details about its remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which is slated to launch sometime this year. Given that timeline, a release date announcement seems likely, with speculation pointing to a launch before late November so the game is available for Black Friday shopping. That timing could also help the remake stand apart from Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 6, since the two titles are expected on different platforms.

Film details expected too

The Direct is also expected to bring updates on the Legend of Zelda film, which is set to hit theaters on April 30, 2027. A short teaser could debut during the broadcast, with a fuller trailer likely following in the following months.

Since half an hour leaves room for more than just two announcements, Nintendo may use the occasion to reveal additional Zelda-related news to mark the franchise's 40th anniversary. Possibilities include a remake of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker or an early tease of the next mainline Zelda title. For context, the game that became Tears of the Kingdom was first announced two years after Breath of the Wild's release, suggesting the timing could be right for a similar reveal.
