Winter Speed Limits Take Effect on Latvian Roads From 15 October
From Thursday, 15 October, the winter-season speed limit of 90 km/h will apply on most Latvian roads. The exception is the Vidzeme highway section between Riga and Sigulda, where up to 100 km/h will be allowed in favourable conditions.

From Thursday, 15 October, the winter-season speed limit will again apply on Latvian state roads. On most roads the maximum permitted speed will be 90 km/h. The change was announced by Latvijas Valsts ceļi (LVC), the state-owned company that manages the national road network.
Exception on the Vidzeme highway
On the Vidzeme highway section between Riga and Sigulda, traffic is regulated by variable-message road signs. In very good driving conditions, the limit there will remain 100 km/h even in winter. If weather and road conditions worsen, the system can lower the limit to 90, 80 or 70 km/h.
Because winter conditions can change several times a day, LVC reminds drivers to follow the instructions shown on the variable signs.
When signs will be changed
The signs regulating speed will be replaced during the day on Thursday. On the Ķekava bypass, the replacement is planned for the night from 15 to 16 October.
Electronic road signs have the same legal force as ordinary ones, and the speed shown on them must not be exceeded. Violations are punished in accordance with the law. If variable signs display no information, the maximum speed outside built-up areas is 90 km/h, but drivers must choose a speed suited to the weather and road situation.
About LVC
The company was established in late 2004 and is state-owned. It administers funding for the state road network, organises procurement for state needs and manages more than 20,000 kilometres of state roads.
