From a childhood dream of banking to leading Beneflo

Entrepreneur Juris Zalāns has returned to the employee benefits industry, this time as investor and head of the platform Beneflo. More than ten years ago he founded a similar solution, Benefit Latvija, but at that time the market was not yet ready for such a product. Zalāns acknowledges the situation has since changed, and he now approaches the industry from a new perspective.

In his view, a successful business requires more than just the right idea and timing — persistence, luck and, above all, a strong team are also essential.

A childhood inspiration and choice of studies

Zalāns recalls that already as a child he had a clear vision of his future — to become a bank vice president. Unlike his peers who dreamed of becoming police officers or firefighters, he specifically wanted that particular position, joking that he believed a vice president earned a salary similar to a president's but with a lighter workload. The banking environment was familiar to him since his mother worked at a bank for a time, and the orderly environment he observed there gave him the impression of broad career opportunities.

His academic path took shape gradually. After secondary school, Zalāns enrolled at Riga Technical University, choosing electronics and electrical engineering, but after three years realized the field did not truly interest him. Later, while working and simultaneously developing his first company, he felt the need for more systematic business knowledge. As a result, in 2008 he began studying business management at Turība Business School, where he could immediately apply what he learned in practice. Equally valuable were the contacts he made with like-minded people during his studies. Zalāns later also earned a master's degree in human resource management, completing those studies in 2025.
