Foreign Ministry envoy returns from Nepal after coordinating search for missing Latvians

A month has passed since catastrophic flooding in Nepal turned what was meant to be a long-awaited holiday into tragedy for a number of Latvian travelers. According to the Latvian Foreign Ministry, 33 Latvian nationals are still listed as missing.

Just days after the disaster struck, a representative of the Latvian Foreign Ministry traveled to Nepal to serve as a direct liaison with Nepali emergency and rescue services and to help gather information that families of the missing in Latvia have been anxiously awaiting.

Three weeks in the disaster zone

The envoy spent three weeks working in the affected country before returning to Latvia. During that time, the representative acted as the main point of contact between Latvian authorities and the Nepali agencies involved in search and rescue operations.

Following the return home, the envoy stated that no bodies of European nationals appear to have been found so far, suggesting that search efforts concerning foreign citizens, including Latvians, in the disaster-hit area continue without concrete results.

With 33 Latvian nationals still unaccounted for, the ministry intends to keep working on clarifying the situation and maintaining contact with Nepali authorities even after its representative's return from the region.
