Waste collection fees will increase slightly in three of Riga's four waste management zones starting October 1. The Riga City Council committee approved the change, citing inflation, labor costs and rising fuel prices.

Riga City Council's Housing and Environment Committee has backed amendments to the decision governing fees for the collection, transport, transfer and sorting of household waste, which will raise rates across most of the capital.

Under the approved changes, waste management fees will rise slightly in three of Riga's four waste collection zones starting October 1 this year. The fourth zone will see no change.

Reasons behind the increase

The committee-backed decision attributes the fee revision to broader cost pressures — inflation, rising labor costs, and increasing fuel prices, which affect the operating costs of waste management companies.

The amendments still require final approval, but the committee's support indicates that most Riga residents will see the new fees take effect from October 1.
