From Dragon to Swan — Eustaquio embraces new chapter

Canadian international midfielder Stephen Eustaquio has joined Swansea City after four and a half years at Porto, in a deal reported at around £3.4m. The 29-year-old admits he had expected his next move might take him to Italy or Spain before his agent raised the possibility of a switch to Wales.

Eustaquio will make his Championship debut away at Derby County this Saturday, followed by a home fixture against Watford and then a meeting with Wrexham within the same week. He said the presence of Portuguese coach Vitor Matos, known for favouring possession-based football, was a key factor in his decision, along with the ambition of helping Swansea push for the play-offs.

During his time at Porto, Eustaquio made 157 appearances, scored 11 goals and provided 12 assists, helping the club win multiple domestic honours. Born in Canada to Portuguese parents, he grew up in Portugal and played for several Portuguese clubs as well as Mexico's Cruz Azul before joining Porto. Earlier this year he spent a loan spell at Los Angeles FC to gain playing time ahead of the World Cup.

Eustaquio had a standout summer with Canada, helping the team reach the round of 16 at the World Cup — the country's best-ever finish — with a late winning goal against South Africa in the knockout stage. Following that match, he gave an emotional interview referencing his parents, both of whom died in the past few years — his mother from brain cancer in 2023 and his father from a heart attack a year later.
