From Writing a Dissertation at 5 AM to a Production Facility in Latgale: The Story of “Rasa Botanicals”

Zane Grigale-Soročina, a cosmetic chemist and mother of three, together with her parents Elita and Māris Grigalis, founded the family business “Rasa Botanicals” in Sutri Parish, Līvāni Municipality. The idea came about ten years ago when Zane, on maternity leave, visited a cosmetics factory and heard that Latvian plants are rich in active substances but few companies process them.

The family studied extraction technologies, received a LEADER project grant, and purchased an ultrasonic extraction device. “Rasa Botanicals” produces two types of extracts: water-glycerin based and oil-based (using grape seed oil). Some plants are grown on-site, others are bought from local suppliers. The production facility was set up in a former farm building, but now space is tight.

The business has three directions: plant extract manufacturing, natural cosmetics, and consulting for new cosmetic brands. Zane’s expertise comes from over 15 years in product development, having participated in the creation of more than 60 cosmetic products. Each product follows a 30-step algorithm from concept to shelf. The family business’s strength is flexibility—it can produce small batches and customize products, which larger manufacturers avoid.

However, the path was difficult. Zane wrote her dissertation at 5 AM for five consecutive years. In the seventh or eighth year of operation, the business ended with zero profit. There were technical issues: a pump dispenser failed, labels peeled off. Despite setbacks, the family persisted, and the LIAA business incubation program helped growth. “The greatest added value is the experience and the people I’ve met,” Zane says.
