Nobel Prize winner Morten Meldal visits Riga to give lecture on click chemistry
Danish chemist and Nobel laureate Morten Meldal (72) came to Riga for a lecture on click chemistry, a method that simplifies the connection of complex molecules and enables more effective cancer drugs.
The hall of the National Research and Innovation Institute was overflowing on Tuesday as Morten Meldal, a Danish chemist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2022 for the development of click chemistry, took the stage.
Click chemistry is a technique that allows for the rapid and simple connection of even highly complex molecules, thereby facilitating the creation of new drugs, especially for cancer treatment. The scientist noted that the technology also holds great potential for other fields.
The event attracted such a large audience that organizers repeatedly asked attendees to squeeze together to make room for everyone. Even Meldal seemed impressed by the turnout – he took out his phone and happily photographed the crowded room.
The Nobel laureate was invited to Latvia by entrepreneur Jānis Berdigans, who recently stepped down from leading the tech giant Printify to focus on a new project related to longevity and biotechnology.
