Camp “Discover Latvia” in Kārķi Brings Together Diaspora and Local Youth
From July 6 to 12, the “Discover Latvia” camp organized by Latvijas Mazpulki in Kārķi gathered 30 participants from Latvia, the USA, Norway, Spain, Scotland, and Estonia to strengthen ties with Latvia, improve Latvian language skills, and build international friendships.
The “Discover Latvia” camp, organized by Latvijas Mazpulki, took place in Kārķi from July 6 to 12, bringing together 30 children and youth from Latvia, the USA, Norway, Spain, Scotland, and Estonia. The seven-day program aimed to strengthen ties with Latvia and foster a sense of Latvian identity for both diaspora and local participants.
During the camp, participants engaged in team-building activities, creative workshops, sports, and orienteering challenges. A highlight was a trip to Valmiera, where they visited the Valmiera Museum, role-played as Hanseatic traders, explored the beekeeping farm “Medus kāre,” and baked bread at the Bread House, experiencing Latvian cultural heritage hands-on.
On the penultimate day, the youth took charge of planning and leading the activities, showcasing their leadership skills. The closing event allowed parents to see the week's achievements, including an exhibition of creative works, performances, and presentations.
Feedback from participants highlighted teamwork and shared experiences as the most appreciated aspects, such as the folk ball tournament, creative workshops, and water activities. Many noted that forming new friendships was the greatest gain, along with improved Latvian language skills and social abilities. Several expressed a desire to return next year.
Parents also observed positive changes, noting increased independence and communication skills in their children. Diaspora families were particularly pleased with the progress in Latvian language use.
The camp was financially supported by the Society Integration Fund from the Latvian state budget.
