Norfolk police commissioner criticised over 127-date theatre tour
Norfolk's police and crime commissioner Colin Sutton has been criticised by local politicians over his plans for a lengthy theatre tour, though his office insists he remains available for official duties.
Colin Sutton, the police and crime commissioner (PCC) for Norfolk and a former detective, is facing criticism from local politicians over his plans to take part in a 127-date theatre tour.
South Norfolk MP Goldsborough criticised the decision, saying that while Sutton is free to pursue a career as a celebrity, Norfolk deserves a commissioner whose main priority is the county.
Matthew Taylor, a Conservative county councillor who came second in the PCC election, said he was shocked to learn of the former detective's plans for such an extended run in theatres. Taylor argued that in the event of a major incident, the public would expect the commissioner to be visibly present and supportive, though not involved operationally, as that responsibility lies with the chief constable.
The BBC contacted Sutton for a response. A spokeswoman for the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk said his theatre activities are being carried out privately and in his own time, and that he would remain available and contactable should any official business require his attention.
The office said it was satisfied that suitable arrangements are in place to ensure the tour does not negatively affect the commissioner's performance of his official duties.
Sutton is due to launch a public consultation on policing priorities for Norfolk next week.
