Norris snatches Madrid pole with last-gasp lap

McLaren's Lando Norris claimed a dramatic pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, beating championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes by just 0.011 seconds in the closing moments of qualifying. Max Verstappen of Red Bull was third, 0.140 seconds off the pace, as all three drivers moved ahead of seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari, which had topped the times after the first runs of the final session.

Hamilton's Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc finished fifth, followed by Mercedes' George Russell and Norris' McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri.

Norris' result came as a surprise given his earlier form in the weekend — he had been fifth in the first qualifying segment, seventh in the second, and 0.449 seconds slower than Hamilton after the initial runs in the final session. He described his decisive lap as among the best of his career.

Hamilton said he was shocked by how the session unfolded, calling his own best lap one of the finest of his career. He had crashed in the final corner during practice and missed part of the session, then improved by only 0.06 seconds on his final attempt — not enough to hold on to top spot. He finished just 0.006 seconds ahead of Leclerc.

Ahead of qualifying, drivers had warned of the risks posed by the new Madring street circuit, where walls sit close to the track on corner exits. Following two red flags during final practice, several teams had expected further stoppages, but qualifying ran without incident.

Piastri trailed his team-mate Norris by 0.470 seconds. Russell, who finished second behind Antonelli at Monza the previous weekend, was 0.314 seconds slower than the Italian in qualifying, a gap that could widen the current 66-point championship deficit between them further on race day.

The top ten was rounded out by Red Bull's Liam Lawson, Alpine's Franco Colapinto and Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad. Home favourites Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso both exited in the first segment, in 17th and 18th respectively. Sainz was later handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Valtteri Bottas, dropping him to 20th on the grid.
