Norris grabs surprise Madrid pole after stunning final lap

Lando Norris produced a surprise pole-position lap in Formula 1 qualifying in Madrid, despite having been only fifth and seventh fastest in the earlier qualifying segments. After the first runs of the final session he trailed pace-setter Lewis Hamilton by almost half a second, before delivering what he described as one of the best laps of his career on his final attempt.

The world champion admitted he was surprised by his own performance, saying everything had come together almost perfectly and that he had been in a strong flow state throughout the lap. His only moment of doubt came at the final corner, where he briefly thought he might hit the wall.

Clean session despite fears

Ahead of qualifying, drivers had warned of a high risk of crashes on the new Madring street circuit, citing tricky corner entries and walls that come back quickly at drivers on exits. Following two red flags in final practice, some teams reportedly held informal bets on how many stoppages qualifying would produce. In the end, the session passed without a single incident.

For much of the session, pole position looked to be a fight between Antonelli and the Ferrari drivers, with Verstappen also in contention. However, Ferrari once again failed to capitalise when it mattered, allowing Norris to rise to the top.

Hamilton, who had crashed at the final corner during practice and missed the second half of the session as a result, improved on his final lap but by only 0.06 seconds — not enough to hold onto pole. He narrowly beat teammate Charles Leclerc by just 0.006 seconds. Norris's teammate Oscar Piastri finished 0.470 seconds off the pace.

George Russell, who had trailed Antonelli throughout the weekend, ended up 0.314 seconds behind the Italian in qualifying, a repeat of last week's pattern in Monza. The top ten was rounded out by Liam Lawson, Franco Colapinto and Arvid Lindblad. Local favourites Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso were eliminated in the first segment, finishing 17th and 18th, with Sainz also facing a potential grid penalty for impeding another driver.
