Norway pulled off a major upset in the World Cup round of 16, defeating Brazil 2-1. Erling Haaland was the hero, scoring in the 79th and 90th minutes.

The first half ended goalless despite chances for both sides. In the 4th minute, Patrick Berg put the ball in the net for Norway, but VAR ruled it offside. Brazil were awarded a penalty in the 13th minute after Matheus Cunha went down in the box, but Bruno Guimarães missed from the spot as goalkeeper Ørjan Nilsen saved. Guimarães became the first Brazil player in 40 years to fail to convert a World Cup penalty (excluding shootouts).

In the second half, Norway pushed forward. In the 67th minute, Haaland came close but was denied at the last moment. The breakthrough came in the 79th minute when Andreas Schjelderup played a clever pass over the defense, and Haaland headed powerfully into the right corner. In the 90th minute, Schjelderup again set up Haaland, who slotted home to make it 2-0.

In stoppage time, Brazil pulled one back through a Neymar penalty, but it was too little too late. The match ended 2-1.

Norway dominated possession (67% to 33%) and completed far more passes (617 of 680) compared to Brazil (279 of 329). Brazil had more shots (14 to 9) and a higher xG (1.13 to 0.46).

Norway will face the winner of Mexico vs. England in the quarterfinals.
