Norway's King Harald V in critical condition, crowds gather in Oslo in support

King Harald V of Norway, Europe's oldest reigning monarch, is in an "extremely serious" condition after his health worsened while being treated at Oslo University Hospital. The 89-year-old has been hospitalised since 17 August with haemolytic anaemia, a condition later complicated by a bacterial bloodstream infection.

The decline in his condition led Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon, who is currently serving as regent, to cancel their official duties and join other royal family members at the King's bedside.

Public shows of support

News of the King's worsening health sparked a wave of public sympathy in Oslo, where hundreds of people gathered outside the Royal Palace to lay flowers, light candles and leave handwritten notes and drawings. Similar gatherings took place in other cities across Norway as residents awaited further news on his condition.

The situation also affected the schedules of senior officials. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre cancelled a planned trip to Germany, saying his thoughts were with the country and the royal family. Parliament Speaker Masud Gharahkhani also cut short a foreign visit to return home.

Harald has reigned as King of Norway since 1991 and has dealt with several health issues in recent years, including surgery to fit a permanent pacemaker. Although he has scaled back his public duties, he has repeatedly rejected the idea of abdicating, stating that the oath he swore before Norway's parliament represents a lifelong commitment.
