Norway's Crown Prince Haakon swears oath before parliament as public mourns King Harald V
Norway's new King Haakon swore an oath before parliament in Oslo on Tuesday, while members of the public began paying respects at the late King Harald V's coffin, lying in state at the Royal Palace.
Norway's Haakon VIII took a formal oath before parliament in Oslo on Tuesday, marking the first significant step of his reign following his father's death. During the ceremony, lawmakers observed a minute's silence in memory of King Harald V, who passed away on Friday.
Queen Mette-Marit, Haakon's wife, did not attend the ceremony as she continues her recovery from a lung transplant.
After the formal proceedings concluded, members of the public began arriving to pay their respects at the late King's coffin, which is lying in state at the Royal Palace and will remain accessible to mourners until 8 September.
In his first address as monarch, Haakon spoke of his father with reverence.
