Mystery of Nancy Guthrie's Disappearance: Nearly Five Months with No Answers
The abduction of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of US TV personality Savannah Guthrie, from her Arizona home remains unsolved. Difficult terrain, law enforcement disputes, and a possible ransom demand gone wrong have turned the case into a long-running puzzle.

Nancy Guthrie, the mother of TV host Savannah Guthrie, was kidnapped from her home in Tucson's Catalina Foothills on January 31. The assailant or assailants vanished into the 'dark sky' night, and the case has remained as obscure as the area's nighttime ever since. Five months on, no suspects have been identified and Guthrie's whereabouts are unknown.
The family believes ransom notes received after the crime are genuine. One demanded millions in bitcoin, and another claimed Guthrie had died, expressing regret. Private investigator Dan Ribacoff suggests the kidnapping may have gone wrong, resulting in her death, which could explain the stalled investigation.
The rugged terrain around the home complicates evidence gathering. The area is extremely dark, surrounded by mountain ranges, and dry watercourses called arroyos are used for movement. Consultant David Smith, a former Arizona law enforcement officer, notes that weather destroys evidence and the high crime and drug use add challenges.
Moreover, infighting between local sheriff and FBI has hampered the probe. Sheriff Chris Nanos insists he involved the FBI immediately, but FBI Director Kash Patel said his agency was kept out for four days. Patel also criticized the decision to send DNA to a private lab. Nanos rebutted these claims.
Experts point to possible crime scene mismanagement. The scene was released too early, potentially complicating any future trial. Nanos admitted he might have preserved it longer.
Theories about Guthrie's fate include being taken to Mexico or dying early. The family continues to offer a $1 million reward. Savannah Guthrie tearfully appealed for tips: 'Somebody knows something.'
