Notaries propose easing legal hurdles for families of severely ill patients
Severe illness often forces families to handle urgent legal matters, but patients may be unable to express their will. Latvia's Sworn Notaries Council plans to submit proposals to the Justice Ministry to simplify the process.
When someone in a family falls seriously ill, relatives are not only faced with the fight for the patient's health. They often also have to deal with urgent legal questions. The situation becomes especially difficult when the patient can no longer properly express their wishes, yet documents still need to be signed, assistive devices obtained, or other important care services arranged.
The Latvian Sworn Notaries Council has now turned its attention to these obstacles. The council plans to submit proposals to the Ministry of Justice in the near future with the aim of improving the existing rules. The goal is to make it easier for relatives to complete the necessary paperwork when a severely ill person is unable to do so themselves.
Currently, there are legal barriers that complicate the representation of severely ill people. Family members who need to act on behalf of the patient may face administrative hurdles, especially in situations where quick decisions are required. The notaries want to change the regulatory framework so that families can organise essential matters without unnecessary delay.
According to the Zemgale Regional Television report, the proposals are expected to be handed over to the ministry soon. They are likely to focus on cases where a person's health condition prevents them from handling their own legal affairs and relatives need a clear, straightforward procedure to follow.
