New York as a pressure cooker for athletes: Knicks title and Albert Šmits joining the Rangers

The magazine Sporta Avīze, in its October issue, examines New York as a place where professional athletes work under enormous pressure. The piece focuses on the city's teams and what it means to play in one of the world's best-known metropolises. One key example is Alberts Šmits, whom the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League picked fifth overall at the draft ceremony on 26 June.

The Knicks return to the top

This summer the New York Knicks won the championship of the National Basketball Association (NBA, North America's professional basketball league) after a 53-year gap. The whole city followed the run. The cheapest tickets for Game 4 of the finals at Madison Square Garden started at $7,500, while the most expensive exceeded $100,000, an NBA record. Television ratings for the finals were the highest since 1998, when the Chicago Bulls, with Michael Jordan, won their sixth and last title.

During the playoffs the Knicks generated roughly $380 million in additional economic activity in the city. The championship parade, only slightly longer than a kilometre, drew more than two million people. Experts estimate that twice as many may have wanted to attend, and even in Manhattan there was no room left many hours before the start.

Demanding fans

The author describes New York as a difficult workplace: local fans are demanding and blunt, and when performance falls short, they say so openly. That pushes general managers to look for replacements. At the same time, outstanding athletes can shine brighter than in other North American cities and secure a lasting place in history.

It is in this environment that Šmits has lived since 26 June. The full article is in the October issue of Sporta Avīze, available by print or digital subscription.
