Sarandon and Einbinder among those arrested at New York protest against Netanyahu

Police in New York moved to break up a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, taking several demonstrators into custody, including actors Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder, known for her role in "Hacks." The rally was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, with participants carrying signs calling to stop arming Israel and end what they described as genocide in Gaza.

An NYPD spokesperson said officers responded after an unscheduled demonstration blocked an intersection. The department said warnings were issued advising people to leave, but some remained, and those who refused to comply were detained. No exact number of arrests was given. Also taken into custody were Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier and New York City council member Chi Ossé. Comedian Sarah Sherman was also present at the demonstration.

Meanwhile, inside the UN General Assembly hall, dozens of delegates from various countries walked out as Netanyahu began speaking. In his address, he criticized several nations, including Britain and France, which have recently moved to recognize a Palestinian state, accusing them of hypocrisy over accusations of Israeli colonialism.

This is not the first time Sarandon has taken part in such demonstrations; she has repeatedly voiced criticism of Israel's conduct in Gaza. Speaking recently at the Venice Film Festival, she said she had lost acting work because talent agencies had advised against hiring her, though she believes public understanding of the situation is gradually shifting. Einbinder, for her part, said earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival that the cost of staying silent outweighs any professional risk, pointing to the industry backlash faced by other outspoken actors, including Sarandon.
