Sources of the newspaper New York Post said four women aged 50 to 60 were crossing the street at a crosswalk when a white Mercedes-Benz hit them. The victims were taken to Jacobi medical center, where one woman was pronounced dead. Two others were reported to be in critical condition, while the fourth was expected to survive.
The New York fire department (FDNY) said its emergency medical crews treated nine people after the crash, local outlet News 12 reported.
How the collision unfolded
Surveillance footage obtained by News 12 shows the Mercedes speeding through the intersection, hitting the pedestrians in the crosswalk and then crashing into several vehicles waiting at a traffic light. Preliminary findings from the New York Police Department (NYPD) indicate the Mercedes rear-ended two vehicles with such force that both were pushed into two more.
The driver suffered minor injuries and remained conscious and alert. According to the New York Post, he reportedly told a witness he had been trying to get through before the traffic light changed.
