Newcastle confirm Howe resignation as head coach
Eddie Howe has stepped down as Newcastle United's head coach after nearly five years, with the club finishing 12th in the Premier League this season.
Newcastle United have confirmed that Eddie Howe has resigned as head coach. The 48-year-old leaves after close to five years at the helm, following a disappointing campaign that saw the Magpies end 12th in the Premier League.
During his tenure, Howe guided the club to two Champions League qualifications and lifted the League Cup in the 2024-25 season. Despite those achievements, the latest season fell short of expectations.
"After a period of personal reflection, I have decided that now is the right time for me to step away from my role," Howe said. He explained that after giving his life, heart and soul to the club with unrelenting energy for nearly five years, it is in the best interests of both himself and the club to recharge and take a break. "Although it's been incredibly difficult to make this decision, I know in my heart that it's the right one," he added, describing the opportunity as the privilege of his lifetime.
Newcastle stated that the process of recruiting a new head coach is at an advanced stage, with German manager Matthias Jaissle emerging as the favourite. The club also confirmed that Howe's assistants Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches, and Simon Weatherstone, along with head of performance Dan Hodges, will leave St James' Park as well.
