Núñez appears to reveal Araújo's Liverpool move before official announcement

Uruguay international Darwin Núñez appears to have prematurely revealed that his compatriot Ronald Araújo is moving to Liverpool, even though the English and Spanish clubs have not yet officially announced the deal. Araújo is reportedly already on his way to Liverpool, where he will join the club from Barcelona on a season-long loan.

Under the reported terms, Liverpool will cover the defender's wages in full, while next summer the club will have the option to sign him permanently for around €55 million, or approximately £47 million.

Núñez's message

On Sunday evening, Núñez posted an emotional message on X, wishing Araújo well at his new club and expressing happiness that he would get to experience the support of Liverpool's fans. Núñez's post suggested that Araújo now belongs among the "reds," effectively confirming the move before either club had done so officially.

Reasons behind the move

The 27-year-old defender, who can operate across several positions at the back, has recently not held as prominent a role at Barcelona as had initially been expected. The loan arrangement allows the Catalan club to ease squad workload while giving Araújo a chance to gain fresh experience elsewhere. Liverpool, for their part, are looking to strengthen their defensive line, and a loan with a purchase option gives the club greater financial flexibility.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has already commented on Araújo's expected departure, saying he holds the defender's abilities in high regard, citing his pace, physical strength and ball-playing skill, but noting that the team's current tactical approach does not fully align with the player's strengths.

Should Liverpool exercise the option after the season, the move would become permanent. Núñez's social media post stands out as a rare case of a player disclosing an impending transfer before the clubs themselves made it official.
