Newsom says he won't run for president if Harris runs again

California Governor Gavin Newsom said in a CNN interview that he would not run for president if former Vice President Kamala Harris decides to run again.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, widely seen as a potential future Democratic presidential contender, has said he will not seek the presidency if former Vice President Kamala Harris chooses to run again.

The remark came during an interview with CNN that was published on Monday. Asked about Harris's plans, Newsom said: "I don't know if she runs but we'll see."

Uncertainty over Harris's plans

Newsom's comments indicate that it remains unclear whether Harris intends to make another bid for the presidency. He has tied his own decision directly to hers, saying that if she enters the race, he will step aside.

Both Newsom and Harris have been mentioned for some time as possible future leaders of the Democratic Party and potential presidential candidates. Newsom's statement is being read as a signal about how the balance of power within the party could shift if both politicians were to weigh entering the race at the same time.

Neither Newsom nor Harris has made a formal announcement regarding their final decision on the next presidential election. Newsom's comment nonetheless suggests he is monitoring the situation closely and is prepared to adjust his own plans depending on what Harris decides to do.
