O'Sullivan unexpectedly loses to Wilson in Shanghai Masters second round
Seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan was eliminated from the Shanghai Masters after losing 4:6 to defending champion Kyren Wilson.
The Shanghai Masters snooker tournament continues with several surprises.
Ronnie O'Sullivan, aged 50, who convincingly defeated an amateur Chinese player in the first round, faced a tough opponent this time. His compatriot Kyren Wilson, the reigning Shanghai Masters champion, took the initiative early on, building a 3:1 lead with a century and a half-century break. O'Sullivan responded with a streak of three century breaks and took the lead. However, Wilson fought back – he leveled the score, then regained control in the ninth frame with a 79-point break. In the tenth frame, Wilson sealed the win with a 97-point break, securing his first victory of the season with a 6:4 scoreline.
Wilson to face Mark Williams in the quarterfinals
Wilson's next opponent will be Welshman Mark Williams, who defeated Chris Wakelin 6:5 in a close match. Williams started strongly but later lost control, allowing Wakelin to force a deciding frame. There, Williams secured his quarterfinal spot with a 65-point break.
Chinese player makes maximum break
The second day of the tournament featured the fifth maximum break (147 points) of the season, achieved by Chinese snooker player Guodong Xiao. However, he could not capitalize on this feat, losing 5:6 to Australian Neil Robertson.
Tournament format
The Shanghai Masters is an invitational event featuring the top 20 players based on the season-end tour ranking. The top eight seeds start from the second round, while the first round includes four local amateur players. Results in this tournament do not affect players' rankings.
