“Oh, you went into geriatrics?” Why young doctors shun the specialty
Latvia’s ageing population means geriatricians are increasingly needed, yet the specialty has not attracted a single new doctor in recent years.
As Latvia’s population ages and life expectancy grows, demand for geriatricians – doctors specialising in comprehensive care for older people – is expected to rise. However, this medical field has failed to attract any new doctors in recent years, making it one of the least chosen specialties among young physicians.
The question “Oh, you went into geriatrics?” illustrates the attitudes that those who do choose the field often encounter, according to Latvian Radio. One of the few young doctors who finds the specialty appealing is Zane Mētra. She told the broadcaster that she appreciates the relaxed atmosphere and the chance to have longer conversations with patients. For her, this approach helps build a better understanding of elderly patients’ needs.
Yet such enthusiasm remains rare among medical residents. If no new geriatricians enter the field, the country could face a shortage of specialists precisely when the need is growing. That would put additional pressure on the health care system and limit access to tailored care for older people.
