Military deserter detonates grenade during ID check in Odesa region; two police officers injured

In the Podilsk district of Odesa region, a 52-year-old man who was absent without leave from the military detonated a grenade during a document check. Two police officers and the man himself were injured.

According to the Odesa regional police, on July 5 a patrol unit stopped a moped driver for a traffic violation. While checking his documents, officers discovered that the 52-year-old man was a serviceman with the status of unauthorized absence from his unit.

The police report that the man then pulled out a grenade and threatened to detonate it, after which an explosion occurred. The blast injured two police officers and the man himself. An investigative task force is currently working at the scene to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
